Miracles
Miracles happen. Wente actually took the trouble to find a nonwhite's side of the story, and listened without judgment. In other words, she actually behaved like a journalist.
Of course, it might have been a good idea to do that before writing two columns on the niqab subject.

I was also pleasantly surprised by this story, but the obsession with Islam remains. Most people in Western societies, even "non-whites', who fall back on reactionary, patriarchal religion out of their alienation from commodified capitalist society opt for evangelical and other fundie Christian sects.
I have no sympathy with niqab wearers, or as an Algerian woman friend says, "women who want to live in a tomb", although Jack Straw wasted a wonderful opportunity to mind his own business as an elected official.
I do think that fundamentalist religion is a powerful reactionary force, all the more because it is able to conscript women as militants against themselves (Mussolinian fascism also did that...) But it has nothing to do with a "clash of civilisations", as fundamentalist movements are found in all major world faiths.
